Silver medalist Tim Morehouse '00 delivers a speech in the Napoli Room last Friday about his Olympic experience representing the United States on the fencing team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Donning a black suit with a silver medal hanging around his neck, Tim Morehouse ’00 admitted he threw off many Brandesians last Friday in his first visit to his alma mater since winning a silver medal as a member of the U.S. Fencing Team at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

“All day, I’ve been walking around campus, and so many people have congratulated me on my Halloween costume,” he joked at the start of his speech. “Maybe it wasn’t the best day to walk around with my Olympic medal.”

Patrick McMullan Photography Showcase

Jason Rogers and I being interviewed at the event

Jason Rogers and I being interviewed at the event

Jason and I were really excited to attend an event showcasing the various works of the American photographer, Patrick McMullan, at the Blue and Cream clothing store on Bowery tonight. McMullan has been a staple in the New York City scene since the 1970s, and Andy Warhol was famous quoted as saying “If you don’t know Patrick McMullan, you should get out more!” The exhibit was curated and hosted by McMullan’s son, Liam McMullan (who if you remember from our last entry, attended our fencing event). The photographs were truly breathtaking; it was like looking back into great moments of our past by seeing photographs of Michael J. Fox, Madonna, Andy Warhol and many others. Though the party was happening, Jason and I had to make it an early night, as we are getting up early to speak to children from the Boystown organization about achieving their dreams and overcoming obstacles. Boystown serves severely at-risk children through its outreach programs and has been around for 90 years serving the communities all over the country in this great cause!

Veterans Day Event in NYC

November 12, 2008
Posing with the Marines

Posing with the Marines

At the historic Salmagundi Club in NYC I had the opportunity to address about 40 Marines from the USS Bataan along with Colonel Charles H. Waterhouse who was being honored for his work as the resident artist of the United States Marine corps.  The dinner was also in honor of the 233rd birthday of the Marine Corps.  The men and women from USS Bataan were so gracious and I couldn’t think of a better thing to do then thank them for all their service to our country.  We wouldn’t have been able to do what we did on the field of play without the brave men and women who protect our country.  It always puts things in perspective to meet folks from our military especially those who have served and will be serving overseas in Iraq and other places.  During the ceremony, a cake was cut with a sword, and in an ancient ceremony; the first piece of cake was given to the oldest marine in attendance who then passed it to the youngest.  This i meant to symbolize the passing of wisdom from the old generations to the new.   Thank you to all our men and women in the armed services and to all of our veterans!

On another note, I found the depiction of military men in different wars very moving.  The exhibit is running through this friday, 11/14, and anyone in the NYC area that wants to stop by for the show can check out the link below for more details.
