Fencing World Championship Qualification Changes: Pan Am Team Decided Now, US National Championships Affected

May 2, 2009
portland-nac-005
With the Pan American Zonal Championships being placed at the same time as our US Nationals this year the qualifying system for our senior world and Pan American team had to be changed on the fly.
-
Below is what was decided would happen for each weapon in terms of qualification for Senior Teams this year.    Decisions were made with National coaches in consultation with National Training Director and others.

The two major things are that 1) since we don’t have another competition until after the Zonal deadline (at least in mens saber) then teams for the Pan American Zonal Championships have basically been decided now.

A situation could occur where someone qualifies for Pan Ams and gets those world points, but doesn’t qualify for worlds.

2) The strength of Nationals is greatly effected: The top-4 in the US ranking as of May 18 will miss the US Nationals and some events at nationals will count less or not at all in women’s sabers case.

QUALIFICATION PATH CHANGES WORLDS AND ZONALS:

The deadline for selection for the 2009 Pan Am Zonal Championships is MONDAY MAY 18th –  5:00PM MST

Due to the conflict between Summer National Championships and the 2009 Pan Am Zonal Championships July 2-9 the National Coaches have decided upon the following:

Men’s Epee: Div 1 National Championships at Summer Nationals will count for rolling points but NOT selection points to the 2009 Senior World Championships; Pan Am Zonal Championships does NOT count toward selection to the 2009 Senior World Championships.
.
Women’s Epee: Award equal points for BOTHDiv 1 National Championships at Summer Nationals and Pan Am Zonal Championships and both count as selection events for 2009 Senior World Championships. (Point values used for both events is Division 1 without repechage column H page A-14 of the USFA Athlete Handbook)
.
Women’s Sabre: Div 1 National Championships at Summer Nationals and Pan Am Zonal Championships will NOT count for selection to 2009 Senior World Championships.
.
Men’s Sabre: 0.6 point value for  Div 1 National Championships at Summer Nationals can count in selection for 2009 Senior World Championships, NO points for Pan Am Zonal Championships.
.
Men’s Foil: 1.0 Strength Factor for Div 1 National Championships at Summer Nationals , 1.3 Strength Factor for Pan Am Zonal Championships. BOTH can count in selection for 2009 Senior World Championships.
.
Women’s Foil: Award equal points for BOTH Div 1 National Championships at Summer Nationals and Pan Am Zonal Championships and both count as selection events for 2009 Senior World Championships. (Point values used for both events is Division 1 without repechage column H page A-14 of the USFA Athlete Handbook

Is it me or does Ms. California sound a little like Sarah Palin during interviews?

May 2, 2009

Miss California USA 2007 by Laphoto1.

FROM A FOX INTERVIEW LAST NIGHT: (Doesn’t she sound like Palin during her Katie Couric interview???)

VAN SUSTEREN: What is your thought on civil unions?

PREJEAN: My thought on civil unions? You know what, Greta? I don’t have the answers to everything. I’m not running for political office. I don’t have the answers to everything, you know, in the world out there.

But I think that there should be rights for people, you know, especially in California. I think that people that are homosexual should have some rights, you know, hospital rights, and things like that.

But I would like to be more educated on that, so when I do have a better answer for you, I will get back to you on that one.

But so far I just support traditional marriage, and that’s my main focus.

VAN SUSTEREN: What about adoption?

PREJEAN: Greta, I am focusing on marriage right now, not adoption, not civil unions, just traditional marriage, and I’m going to do whatever it takes to promote that.

Just a thought…same school of public speaking maybe???

Comment from reader:

I think she’s forgetting that traditional marriage meant arranged marriages. And that she would be sold for cattle. Since the State of California is so poor, perhaps we can give her a “traditional” marriage, and sell her off to the Palin family. I hear Track (or is it Trig?) is still single.
