Lime and Strawberry “Dessert”

July 5, 2009

Monica: you missed the fact that I said “desert” instead of “dessert”.

According to me it was the “Lemon and Strawberry Desert”…which does sound like a cooler dish…too bad this was actually decoration for the real deserts! (I’m slow sometimes!)

All better now! ;)

The “Yankee” “Gringos” Dominate Pan American Games

July 5, 2009

Yankee Gringos 022

“Yankees Dominate”(above) and something about “Impressive Gringos” (below) were some of headlines today in the El Salvador newspapers .  lol.Yankee Gringos 011

They get an A+ for covering the sport although it’s kind of funny they called us “Yankees” and “Gringos”.   Parts of the competition have been on television and almost all the newspapers had stories about it.   They seem to be d0ing a better job of covering our team than our own federation! (The bar is not very high for that sadly)

Yankee Gringos 017
US Referee Brad Baker (above) enjoys the headlines posted on the wall at the venue.

Quick addition from Alex (THANKS!) who writes: The top headline says, ‘with its team rich in talent the United States sweeps its opposition and reaps a golden harvest’ (Now that’s a sweet headline!)

We really need to do a better job as an organization of publicizing our amazing stories!  Fencer Mariel Zagunis is the #1 ranked fencer in the world, just secured the world cup for the season (first time in her career) and recently won a world cup and we didn’t even put a small release together for the USOC website! (Shame and sadness on us) Which by the way, USA Today  writers read to determinate who will be their Olympian of the week. Sigh.

World University Games in Belgrade: Wang of China Wins in Men’s Saber; Yakimenko of Russia injured

July 5, 2009

The prestigous World University Games in Belgrade are under way…(No US fencers are competing, but many of the top fencers in the world are there)

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE RESULTS! (It’s a little confusing to figure out)

Headlines:
In men’s saber, Jingzhi Wang
of China defeats Bukievich of Belarus for Gold 15-14.  Zhong and Samelle of Italy are 3rd.

In women’s epee, Ewa Nelip of Poland defeats Deac Simona of Romania 15-13 for Gold.  Kochneva Olga of Russia and Nakano Nozomi are 3rd.

Italy WC 031

In big news,  it’s being reported that one of the top ranked saber fencers in the world and recent Silver Medalist at the Dallas World Cup Alexey Yakimenko of Russia tore his achilles tenden and will miss European zonals and most likely World Championships.

If true, this is devastating news for a fencer who would be one of the favorites to win World Championships.  You never want to see athletes get injured.

This is a big weekend for fencing!

Pan American Games, US Nationals and World University games are all happening on this weekend!

Jon Normile and Seth Kelsey sharing a moment after their pools are completed on day 2 as Cody Mattern watches the floor.    Check out my twitter for the results: www.twitter.com/timmorehouse

I have internet access at the venue so I’ll be posting live updates.  Women’s foil is set to begin shortly.   Women’s Saber and Men’s Foil are tomorrow.

Pan Ams Day 2 014

Nicole Ross and Ambika Singh warming up at Pan Ams

Nicole Ross, Ambika Singh and Nzinga Prescodare competing in foil today.  The race for the world team is still on for them.   Nationals and Zonals are counting equally for US points.  Only 3 women’s foil fencers are here, there could have been a 4th, but the rest opted to go to US Nationals.
