Was Kanye West and Taylor Swift VMA’s incident Staged?

September 14, 2009

The moment was “shocking” as Kanye West came on stage to take the microphone from Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech for best female music video, but was this real??

Seconds after it occurred the twitter/Facebook world exploded with tweets and status  updates about the incident and I’m sure tons more people turned to MTVas a result and more will soon watch the show and event as the VMAs are re-run over and over again for the next few weeks and on the internet.

You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect dramatic event to boost ratings and PR for Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Beyond and the VMAs.  It happened early in the show and the action of Kanye West would leave a plot line running through the show…would Taylor Swift respond or would someone stand up for her?   What would happened? You had to stay tuned to find out!

Then, with a perfect Hollywood ending, Beyonce wins best music video at the end of the show and brings out an awaiting Taylor Swift from backstage to finish her acceptance speech.   The crowd goes wild, Beyonce looks great, Taylor Swift gets super amounts of sympathy and I’m sure additional record sales and ratings for all involved.   Kanye plays the role of the bad guy, but  does he really mind?  He apologizes later and now has has  days of a viral storyline with him in it sure to be discussed all week on news stations and gossip sites with new twists and turns sure to come…stay tuned!

Too perfect, no? And, MTV has shown a history of  staging events in the past such as when Sacha Barron Cohen landed on Eminem’s face with his butt during another award show.  During that show,  Eminem walked out looking angry and it turned out just to be a publicity stunt.  Besides, it’s MTV’s MO these days to stage things.  Just look at there “reality” shows  they run which are all scripted and staged.

There is too much money on the line to just let a show happen without ensuring there will be some drama or water-cooler viral stories that occur.  Drama=ratings=money.    The people doing these shows aren’t stupid and they have all the data and experience to know what kind of things will add to ratings.   This is PR 101 these days and a great lesson for those looking to learn how to generate viral media.

A lot of what we see these days on TV is staged.  Who knew that WWE wrestling was only the start of fake “real” TV?

Regardless, I enjoyed the drama staged or not, but its important that we look at this stuff with a critical eye as television continues to be such a strong manipulator of society and people’s lives.  We certainly play right into their hands, I know I was quick to twitter and call my friend right afterwards.  Either way,  well played MTV.

  1. I don’t know if it was staged. I mean, what would Kanye gain? They say any publicity is good publicity, but does he really need any more? In light of all the racist comments that people have made regarding the Serena Williams incident at Flushing Meadow, why would Kanye stage this–if only to fall victim to those same people who will start claiming that it’s just another Black person who thinks they are owed the world?

  2. I don’t have evidence either way, but really worth thinking about because so much of this stuff is fabricated these days and we all seem to fall right into it. Also, if this was a “scripted” eventthen they had this plan in place long before what happened with Serena Williams did at the US Open.

Let’s see if Kanye West’s sales go up over next week.

  3. Hey, you totally have a point!

But hint: THEIR hands….THEIR reality shows, mate!!
    not there hands….there reality shows….

You were THERE, with THEIR child!—–for example!!
And I’m not even from USA!God.

  4. Also, most importantly, who the f cares for this drugged wannabes??
Twitter and facebook are overused by people who lack their own lives!Who with his/her self career cares about some midget Kanye West?
Let him make his little songs, about heartbreak, or drunk and hot girls, sure, we’ll use them on the dance floor, or something, but who the f** does the dude think he is?
And who the f do yall think he is, to even pay him and some shit show VMA’s such attention??That’s why the world is pathetic, for a looong time, cause these non-talented “singers” are the most talked about!Let them have their show, they gonna have it, cause it’s money talk, but can we like drop the issue, cause it really is no way connected to the average American, or whoever!
These little singers contribute nothing to this world, only to their pocket and account, and yacht, and drugs.Talk about twisted image and twisted values.
They are all replaceable with their funny little songs.
Taylor Swift, today Miss XY, tomorrow!Who cares, NEXT!

  5. Plus, Serena Williams and Kanye West are two completely different things!
Serena has a totally different career.
She does sports, Kanye is a wannabe, she is a champion, Kanye is a faker and talker, and publicity seaker, product of money made society.
So talking about sport… in sport many of the GREATEST have also as Serena snapped before, overtaken by emotions and huge effort, BUT that one ugly spot doesn’t make them any more deserving or any less of a champion!
Just remember Zinadine Zidane at World Cup, what he did to that Italian player, he lost it in the heat of the moment, it happens, cause sport is intense and it’s tough as hell to perform on that level!
Serena fu** up, and we all f** up sometimes!
She’s bigger then that one mistake, and she’ll learn from it!
And all little people can dish her, sure, what else they got??Sure not 11 Grand Slam titles!!!

  6. i didn’t get to watch the whole show, so did taylor swift make another appearance onstage between the kanye incident and beyonce inviting her back onstage? i was just wondering what the reason was for her wardrobe change since it’s only done for different planned segments of the show. and yes i agree, at this point mtv is likely to do ANYTHING to get its ratings back up.

  7. It was faked. The hoax would have us believe all of the following: 1. That Mr. West would literally lose control of himself and bolt up to the stage. . That the very same “out of control” Mr. West would politely reassure Miss Swift “I’ll let you finish”. 3. That Miss Swift and Mr. West would both keep the VMA award statue carefully within the TV camera frame during a supposedly spontaneous and shocking outburst. 4. That stage security would allow any unauthorized person to rush toward an on-air camera set without getting Tazed. WHAT ABOUT THE JAY LENO APPEARANCE? Okay, Kanye knows it’s faked. But Jay Leno blindsides him with a question about his departed mother. For Mr. West to continue the prank, he is faced with pulling his late mother’s name into a lie. He realizes that’s a line no one should cross. He thinks for a way out, he can’t, he drops his head and covers his face. Wise move. Think about it. When he and Miss Taylor eventually reveal the hoax, any lie involving his mom would be viewed as unforgivable. Mr. West and Miss Taylor have pulled a Grade A hoax using Grade C acting talents. In fact, both of them got the biggest reactions from their NON-reactions (his on Leno and her “deer in the headlights” stillness at VMA)

  8. [...] Tim Moorehouse suggested in his blog that the incident could have been all staged by MTV. See: Was Kanye West and Taylor Swift’s VMA incident Staged?, which leads to my next question, if the media will rig a music awards show in this fashion should [...]

  9. Its obviously staged, a friend I know attended the show and told me that it was all set up. Kanye got more people talking about him, he’s use to playing the arrogant bad guy, just like back when he said bush doesn’t care about black people when hurrican katrina hit. He did it to divert attention away from the crisis onto himself, a guy like that will go as far as to do anything for fame. Taylors not so innocent, she hooks up with hollywood guys so she can sing about how awful they are once they break up. She does it for the fame, that’s her gimmick to appear like the viginal innocent girl to which she is not. As for beyonce did yall not see her reaction, she can’t act to save her life, she was trying hard to act shocked when Kanye mentioned herhaving the best video. You’ve seen her on dream girls you know her ass lacks acting ability and it showed at the award show. Yall need to stop putting these “stars” on a pedistol, they are just people who happen to be greedy for fame and money. They will go as far as to lie to their fans to get what they want. They don’t care about you, they care about what you can give them. Don’t waste your hard earned money on these people, aint nothing but pegeons on the street looking to eat your scraps.

  10. lol. “yall” is the most annoying fucking word you Americans can use. It just aches with redneck stupidity.
