Limbach Wins Saber World Championships; USA Men’s Saberists Out Early

Nicolas Limbach of Germany (pictured jumping above) captured his first individual world saber championship today defeating Rares Dumetrescu of Romania 15-11 in Antalya, Turkey.

Team USA Men’s Saber had a rough day with Tim Morehouse, James Williams and Ben Igoe all losing in the round of 64. First time world team member, Daryl Homer, had the best day, defeating Torchuk of Ukraine to advance to the 32 overcoming a 12-5 deficit in the process. He then fell in a close match to Spain’s Jorge Pina in the round of 32.

Notable: 2008 Olympic Champion Man Zhong lost in the 32 to Boris Sanson of France. 2004 Olympic Champion Aldo Montano lost 15-14 to Dumetrescu in the quarter-finals.

Team events begin tomorrow with women’s saber and men’s foil competing.
