Fencing.Net: Men’s Sabre and Men’s Foil Fencers Advance on Day 1 of World Championships

All 8 fencers from the US Men’s Foil and Sabre squads advanced through to the second phase of World Championships competition. All four sabre fencers – Tim Morehouse, Daryl Homer, James Williams, and Ben Igoe fenced in the preliminary rounds and then Williams and Igoe had an additional elimination match to qualify for the top-64 table on November 6th.

Press Release: “Fencing Masters NYC” Brings Together World Champion Fencers In Televised Event To Support Team USA Fencing

The largest spectator fencing tournament outside of the Olympic Games in the USA will be held on Thursday, November 17 when New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom will host the first annual Fencing Masters NYC. The event will be hosted by U.S. champion and Olympic silver medalist Tim Morehouse and produced by New York-based WCMG Events. The event will also be televised on SNY, marking the first time that a U.S. fencing competition will be televised besides the Olympic Games since the 1980s. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Olympic fencing hopefuls as they train to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The tournament will feature Olympic fencing champions, Aldo Montano (Italy), Nicolas Lopez (France), Olga Kharlan, (Ukraine), Mariel Zagunis (USA) along with international Olympians Jaime Marti (Spain), Alex O’ Connell (Britain), and USA Olympic medalists and champions Tim Morehouse, Ben Igoe, and Daryl Homer. Team USA will fence the World Champions during a dramatic and unprecedented evening of fencing entertainment.

“We are very excited to bring this event to New York City to introduce our sport to new fans,“ said Morehouse. “The tournament provides a great opportunity to showcase and educate New Yorkers and Americans about the athleticism and prestige surrounding the sport.”

In support of this extraordinary and historic evening, fencing clubs across the country are hosting men’s saber qualifier tournaments where the winner will get a chance to compete against Olympic gold medalist Aldo Montano in front of the over 2,000 spectators expected to attend.

The Fencing Masters NYC kicks off with a Fencing Expo for kids, adults, fencers, and non-fencers alike, which takes place from 3:00 – 7:00pm at the Hammerstein Ballroom. At 6:30 pm VIP’s will be treated to a meet and greet with additional celebrity athletes from the world’s of figure skating, speed skating, synchronized swimming, rowing and women’s basketball along with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Doors open at 7:00 pm.
