October 8, 2012

This is a very exciting day for me with the release of the MOREHOUSE USA ELITE fencing shoes by Absolute Fencing.

I always dreamed of having a shoe named after me!   I’m giddy.   Thank you to Absolute Fencing (Gary and Amanda and the whole team there) for being so supportive of me and so visionary about where we can take our sport.

These are also a great pair of fencing shoes at a price ($75) that should be affordable to everyone in our community without sacrificing on quality and design.

I’ll be signing autographs and shoes in St. Louis if you’re there from 12-3pm on Saturday and Sunday!   More exciting things in the works will be coming soon! -Tim

THREE-TIME OLYMPIC TEAM MEMBER TIM MOREHOUSE MAKES

HISTORY WITH MOREHOUSE USA ELITE FENCING SHOE

Absolute Fencing, a leading fencing equipment company, is naming a shoe after Olympic silver medalist Tim Morehouse

NEW YORK — Olympic silver medalist Tim Morehouse has become the first U.S. fencing athlete to have a shoe named after him. The “Morehouse USA Elite” shoe, which will be produced by Absolute Fencing, a leading fencing equipment company, will go on sale this week.  Morehouse will personally autograph the first 100 pairs of shoes available for the first time at the St. Louis North American Cup Oct. 12-15.

The shoes, which will retail at $75 (compared to more than $150 or more for most fencing shoes) will be available at the Absolute Fencing website (www.absolutefencinggear.com). A special promotional rate of $69.99 will be available until the end of October. A portion of the proceeds from the shoe sales will benefit Fencing in the Schools, Morehouse’s foundation whose mission is to bring the sport of fencing to schools around the country to fight obesity and spread Olympic ideals.

“I think this is a great move on Absolute Fencing’s part,” said Morehouse, who won an Olympic silver medal in Beijing and is the only remaining active U.S. male Olympic medalist fencer on Team USA. “They’re supporting an athlete and also helping to market their shoes to the community.  This is a win-win.”

Morehouse says his mission to grow the sport involves making it more accessible and affordable.  “What I love about these shoes is that they are not just the best pair I’ve ever worn, but also priced in way that is affordable for everyone,” he says.

Founded by Gary Lu, a former national team member and four-time All-American fencer at Penn State, Absolute Fencing is a family-owned business that has been supporting USA Fencing, and is the official equipment provider to major fencing events worldwide including the 2011 World University Games and 2010 Asian Games. Absolute also sponsors the US Fencing academic scholarships program to top academic fencers.

“Tim has been one of our country’s greatest Olympians, but the reason we love him is that he has been one of our best ambassadors and role models,” Lu said. “We’re honored to be working with him, and we want to help him promote fencing and reach more kids and people across the country.”

In addition to Morehouse’s trips to the Olympic Games, he is a two-time U.S. National Champion (2010, 2011) and recently was honored as a “Champion For Change” at the White House for his service to the country with the Teach For America Program. Morehouse recently authored American Fencer: Modern Lessons from an Ancient Sport (www.americanfencer.com), a book that chronicles his journey from the streets of Washington Heights to the Olympic podium and he is currently on a promotional tour around the country to spread fencing and fight childhood obesity.(www.timmorehouse.com)

World Cup Circuit #1 | Plovdiv, Bulgaria Starts Tomorrow

February 4, 2011

The 2011 International men’s saber Fencing Season kicks off tomorrow morning with the start of the world cups in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Team USA has 7 fencers here:  Daryl Homer, Tim Morehouse, James Williams, Ben Igoe, Dan Bak, Jeff Spear and Mike Etropolski along with coach Yury Gelman.  Andrew Fischl was a last minute scratch after he injured his knee last week.

This season’s schedule is different from the past.  First, there will be only 8 international senior tournaments in each weapon.  In the past, men’s saber had 14-15 world cups with varying strengths.   With only 8, every country will attend (should) each world cup, making for no easy competitions.

The Plovdiv, Bulgaria World Cup is also the first of 3 grand prix tournaments.  They will count as 1.5 of a regular world cup.   Meaning, they will award more points for Grand Prix events.

Team events are now help with the “regular” world cups.  Countries may only send 8 fencers to a grand prix and 12 to a “regular” world cup.   However, because most countries have more than 8 strong fencers, and because of the reduced numbers, it should mean that the “regular” world cups will likely be stronger and larger than the Grand Prix ones.

Will post results from day tomorrow.  There are 135 total competitors.   119 compete tomorrow with pools and preliminaries for 48 spots into the second day of 64.

Fencing Gets Modern! New Technology For Scoring Machines…

March 7, 2010

Yes, that’s a fencing scoreboard, and, yes, that is a video game controller, and, yes, that’s what the referee holds to add the score up, but there is much more!

The system is attached to a lap top and using the controller, the machine says “fence” “halt” or anything else you want it to say.  The noises can be adjusted to any sound file on your computer.

Even more interesting, is that the machine also provides data on the time between hits.  The “3″ on the picture above is th amount of time in milliseconds between the first hit and second.   If only one light comes on and both fencers hit, the fencer whose light doesn’t come on can see how far away they were from getting their light on!  Very cool!

I could see this being very helpful in practice for fencers when it comes to the timing of finishing an attack against preparation.

The one glitch I saw was that two machines were each using the same computer voice so the fencers on the wrong strip kept stopping for the other box, but that can easily be adjusted.

These machines just look way cooler also.  Go job whoever figure this one out!
