Pretty cool…
Hope I make it so I can stay there! We start officially qualifying for London 2012 in about 26 days at the Athens World Cup!!!! (Can’t believe qualification is here already!)
This was the artists rendering before it was built…

Along with my fellow fencing Olympic teammates Keeth Smart, Erinn Smart and Susie Paxton we attended a celebration held by the British Consulate on the HMS Albion docked at NYC.
On hand were numerous Olympians, dignitaries and others to celebrate the half-way point to the next Summer Olympic Games!
You can check out the article here:

And, my interview where I compared the Olympics to the Chronicles of Narnia…

“I still don’t realise I’m a sports star.”
In most people’s books, Olga Kharlan would not be one. But, while fencing struggles to find an audience in many countries, the 19-year-old sabre specialist helped it onto the Ukrainian front pages with one of the most memorable displays of the Beijing Games. READ MORE:

Interestingly enough…BBC news will be tracking Olga’s Olympic qualification and there is a place to email her questions within the story…wonder how they selected Kharlan versus our very own Zagunis for example?
Olga Kharlan is one of the athletes being tracked for World Class 2012 in partnership with the British Council.

8-Time Olympic Speed-skating Medalist Apolo Ohno (After a great visit to the Today Show) along with other members of the US Olympic Family were on-hand at the BMW dealership on 57th and 11th street in NYC for the big announcement that BMW has re-joined the Olympic Movement as a sponsor of Team USA!
BMW will be sponsoring the USOC directly as well as four sports: Speedskating, Bobsled/Skeleton, Swimming and Track and Field.
What is most interesting about this partnership is that they plan to not only provide funds, but also be a resource for improving the technology of our athlete’s equipment to help them go faster!
So, what has Ohno been doing since the Olympics? He’s got a book coming out in October (I will definitely check that out) and he’s currently trying to build a career in TV. (Best of Luck Apolo! You’re a true Olympic hero!)
Tonight, I’ll be joining teammates Keeth Smart, Erinn Smart, Susie Paxton for an event with the British Consulate to celebrate the two-year countdown to the London Olympics!!!

New York City will be in the Olympic spirit on Monday with multiple Olympic countdown events taking place. In the morning, Olympic Champion speed skater Apolo Ohno will speak at a press conference to announce a new Olympic sponsorship with a major brand who will be sponsoring the US Olympic Committee directly along with 4 Olympic sports. (Sadly, fencing is not one of them)
I’ll be on-hand for the announcement along with a host of other folks. In the evening, the British Consulate is hosting Olympic athletes, dignitaries and Olympic sponsors for an event celebrating 2-years until the start of the London Games! Crazy! I have the honor of speaking at that event to convey our country’s excitement for the Games in London 2012.
Should be a fun day tomorrow with practiced sandwiched in between!

Apparently this modeling thing has some legs…
Never in my life, especially while working at Teach For America teaching 7th grade Social Studies did I think I’d be a Wilhelmina Model doing photo shoots for fashion brands and magazines, but since the Beijing Olympics as we’ve tried to promote fencing it seems like the fashion world has really been a great ally. Who knew?
The past two weeks we’ve been doing a number of exciting shoots and I guess we’ll see how far this will go! The NY Post’s Page 6. The Huffington Post and Vanity Fair can’t be wrong, right? They’ll all discussed our modeling adventures…
I love the idea of promoting fencing in a similar manner to what Nacho Figueras the Polo player has done, but to even a greater level since our sport is much more accessible…(we don’t need horses and fields to play!)
Check out this article on him from the New York Times on him:”Putting Glamour on Horseback“. The gist, he’s a Polo player, Ralph Lauren model and does an amazing job promoting his sport and finding it a unique niche for sponsors.

My vision for fencing’s niche in our modern-day society is that it can be both unique social gathering and sporting event for adults and a learning tool and participation sport for children.
It’s an expanded vision built on what Nacho has done with Polo matches in the Hamptons except we can do these in the major cities like NYC and LA and we also can teach tons of children to do it in schools and clubs.
The sport would be on display in an elegant manner both in regards to where its taking place and how the fencers and crowd interact and dress. Think old school chivalry and honor meets modern-day fashion and technology. It would be a re-branded modern version involving fencing’s spectacular history as a sport of Kings and Nobility with its new benefits as a safe (no one gets stabbed anymore!) sport of strategy and athleticism for people to do to be healthy at all ages.
The Italian Fencing Association is doing this the best right now. See my “Fencing Done Right…” article for some pictures of what fencing could be.
Plus, wouldn’t it be cool to have people settling their differences again with a duel?
Stay tuned!

My inbox definitely has been full since the NY Post article Hot Bachelor came out!
Although (sadly) most of the emails have been from friends asking, “Have you gotten a ton of emails from women now?”
The answer is that we have gotten a few emails from women. A girl I met on the train a few years ago, saw the article and emailed. We each received a few emails with pictures…(Apparently the male nurse turned out to be the most popular in terms of email responses)
At our fencing club, the adult beginer class also had an additional 5 women join last week who saw the article! (That’s pretty cool)
Anyway, we truck on trying to promote fencing and create exposure that will lead us to sponsorships and partnerships to train for the London Olympics.

The author of the NY Post article Danica Lo and I on the set of the Fox Show "Happy Hour" holidng up the article...cheesy? Definitely.
