“America’s Next Top Fencer” Clinic!

July 20, 2009

Jason feels the love from his "students"

Jason and I held our fourth fencing clinic this past weekend at Manhattan Fencing Center and this one proved to be a little more interesting than previous ones!

First issue, somehow our invite ended up on the popular events website urbandaddy.com and our club started getting constant phone calls!  Great sign for fencing that there was so much interest, but with no equipment for additional people we were nervous about what to do!

Jame's team shows off its new moves

Luckily, we stemmed the tide and only had about 10 additional folks show up to watch. (Which was pretty cool and they were all really nice!)

Once the clinic got underway, our new fencers showed their skill under the expert tuitilage of our Olympic and National team friends: James Williams, Daria Schneider, Alex Krul, Melvin Rodriguez, and Emma Barrata did an awesome job!  Thanks guys!

We paired off the fencers into teams and after a battle for the ages it was hard to figure out who truly was “America’s Next Top Fencer.”   Although I think everyone showed flashes of future greatness.

There was some additional “drama”  to our event but I’ll leave that up to your investigative abilities to discover!

Derek twitters about his experiences fencing...if you read his tweet's you'll discover the 2nd drama of the night!

We want to thank our brand new fencers!   Anne Latarte, Derek Blasberg, Scott Buccheit, Chris Bollen, Jessica Flint, Nicole Sawyer, Jourdan Lawlor, Jason Rosenberg, Marianna Marcus, Kelly Shaver, Kim and Tim!

Brandeis Alumnus and Olympian Morehouse Makes pitch to promote Fencing
D
aily News Tribune by David Ostrowsky

To the casual observer, garnering a silver medal in the Olympics – something Brandeis alum Tim Morehouse and his saber mates did in Beijing last summer – would be enough.

Instead, Morehouse used his silver medal as a springboard for promoting fencing to schools, corporations and anyone else interested in listening to the top-ranked fencer in the United States.

Olympic Celebrity Reveals Sleek Physique Secret
Joanne Eglash
Beijing Olympics silver medal champion Tim Morehouse began his fencing career in middle school. “I was the last person anyone expected to see in Athens in 2004 because I’m not a natural athlete, I don’t fence by the book, and I had no financial backing as I traveled around the world attempting to qualify for the Olympic team,” recalls Tim. He eventually became an alternate.

Movers and Shakers: Tim Morehouse, Silver Medal Winner of the Men’s Saber Team at the 2008 Olympics
by Peachy Deegan

Tim Morehouse was born and raised in New York City in Manhattan and also in Riverdale in the Bronx. There are very few Olympians who are born, raised and actually train in NYC and he is one of them. He won a Silver Medal at the 2008 Beijing Games in men’s saber team. The club where he trains is the Manhattan Fencing Center located on 39th and 8th. His teammates and he have the goal to win the first gold medal in men’s fencing history while also bringing fencing to a new level of national recognition. Tim has been out on the NYC social scene promoting himself and his sport this past year and attended some of the hottest events in town while helping to promote great charities such as Boys Town and Right To Play. Also he is a motivational speaker and has mostly been speaking to companies in NYC.

Olympians Host Feisty Fencing Clinic
by Scott Buccheit

Saturday night I attended a fencing clinic at the Manhattan Fencing Center hosted by my friends, the silver medal Olympians Tim Morehouse, Jason Rogers and James Williams. I have a new respect for the Olympic athletes after experiencing just a couple hours of the sport.

High Line Park Benefit Hosted by Calvin Klein

June 17, 2009

For years, the above ground High Line train tracks remained vacant of trains or usage of any kind, but now the 30 block long stretch of track is a gorgeous park thanks to a ten year project spearheaded by some intrepid New Yorkers.

Last night, the park had it’s celebrity benefit opening and I’m sure the original builders never imaged their tracks would one day be host to one of the hottest parties in town!

Jason Rogers and I attended as guest of Calvin Klein and it was truly amazing to walk the park with its gorgeous views of the city and New Jersey, trees and the rail tracks, a reminder of what once used to be here.

Guest included: Model Lydia Hearst (pictured above with Jason and I), actor Bradley Cooper(who we chatted with as he downed some EmergenC that he had stashed in his jacket),Danny Devito(who actually fenced Jason at the party!), photography scion and Welsh royalty Lord Scott Buccheit, Andrew Saffir, Olivia Palermo, Josh Reed and Ed Norton. (Whose interaction we had with him will one day be a story we share on Letterman or Leno as to how dumb Jason and I can both be sometimes!)

Jason and I also filmed some great interviews, including one with Danny Devito who actualy fences (and wins) Jason at the party!  This is going to be for our new video series  on my blog for www.teamusa.org. (Video coming soon!)

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has helped thousands of children battle cancer and their research has helped improve the recovery rate drastically for children diagnosed with Cancer.

This evening I was privileged to attend their fundraiser fashion show which my friend Scott Buccheit helped to put together and in which my friend Miss New York Leigh-Taylor Smith was walking in! (She did a fantastic job!)

The event was at the 26th and Lexington armory and featured a silent and live auction as well as dancing and a fashion show where the dresses were later sold for charity.    The event was called Design Cares presents Kaleidoscope of Dreams to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and fashion designers donated dresses for the cause.st-judges-hospital-event-065

Plenty of familar faces abound, Rachelle Hruska from the Guest of a Guest social scene blog, Tia Walker, Shannon Dougherty, Patrick McMullan, Tony Sirico (aka Pauly Walnuts) from the Sopranos , Jaslene from Americas Next Top Model amongst many others.

Also made some new friends with the very nice Alise Shoemaker and her friend Amy who also walked in the show.

A Night With D-Lo, Jason and Tim: Calvin Klein Event, Carmen Electra and Vitamin Water

April 3, 2009

vitaminwater-bozos-jpg

Following 5 hours of practice today and still reeling from President Obama’s comments about the USA Fencing Team we decided the best remedy to our sadness was to venture out into the city tonight with our good friend Danica Lo. (Our friend Leigh Taylorwas also surpassed to join us but a 1-week past expiration glass of milk ended her evening before it began! Yikes!)

We started at the Calvin Klein store where Jason Rogers had been invited and dressed in the newest CK jeans by the fashion company for their event.    One of the gossip girls was there (I’m terrible with names) and so were our pals Scott Buccheit, Naeem Delbridge and Lydia Hearst.

The event was fun and we made some great new friends amongst the CK family.  We then headed over to the Vitamin Water party where they were marketing their new 10 calorie drinks.   We got to hang out with Carmen Electra for a bit (that was cool) as well as our Micah Jesse.(As soon as I get my camera cord I’ll post some photographs!)

At the Vitamin Water event they had a pretty cool photo booth and it turns out that cramming into those booths for pictures is one of Danica’s favorite things to d0! ( hence the photo above.)

Now, wouldn’t Vitamin Water make a great sponsor for fencing???
