Olympian Tim Morehouse Speaks at Ameriprise

May 6, 2009

amerprise-good

My growing motivational speaking career took me to the offices of the Ameriprise Financial Groups Manhattan office today.

I spoke to approximately 40 of their financial advisors,  sharing with them my Olympic story and the lessons I learned along the way about the power of proper goal setting and going for it with the right mental approach.

My key messages related to reaching your goals are about using your strengths, what it truly means to own responsibility for your goals and how to turn challenges into positives.

Also in attendance were my Olympic Teammate Jason Rogers, my college teammate Boris Moyston and friend Van Adams.

The Amerprise group was great and special thanks to Dan Klein for inviting me to speak!   Thanks guys!

We Can All Be Olympians!

February 18, 2009

The Olympic motto is Citius, Altius, Fortius, which means faster, higher and stronger.  It could have been fastest, highest and strongest but it wasn’t for a reason.   Being an Olympian isn’t about being the best in the world necessarily (although this can be your goal), but most importantly it’s about being the best we each can be in pursuit of the things we love.

We all have different starting points in the game of life.  We each have advantages and disadvantages, but while we can’t control where we start, we can control where we finish and how we choose to operate on a daily basis.

When I talk to children, most of them don’t realize just how much they actually achieve if they dream big, work hard and don’t give up when faced with challenges even if they are starting further back in the race.

I was not the most talented fencer or even close to it!  In almost everything I became good at in my life I usually began by being bad!  Usually I was much worse than those around me and I would often make more mistakes than my peers, including the sport that would one day take me to the Olympics!

You don’t need to be perfect to be an Olympian.  I’m living proof.    If you set big goals, are prepared to try to learn from every mistake and keep your eyes on the big prize you’ll be amazed at how much you accomplish in pursuit of whatever it is that you find meaningful.

The most powerful lessons I learned along the way to Achieving My Olympic Dreams

1)     The most powerful step you take is to set big goals for yourself

2)     The most powerful step you take is to set big goals yourself (Yes, this deserves repeating!)

3)      Work hard with your big goals in mind (10,000+ hours is the time estimated for mastery of an activity!)

4)      Learn from every situation  good and bad in the pursuit of your big goals

5)     Don’t give up! Challenges are a part of the process, try to enjoy them!

6)      Having the right kind of role models and people around you is very important

7)      Spend as much time working on your unique strengths as you do on your weaknesses

8.)      Own responsibility for achieving our goals and don’t make excuses!

9)      Set smaller and progressively higher measurable goals to track your progress towards your big one!

10)   Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do!

Don't forget to celebrate well when you achieve your dreams! :)

Oh, and one more thing...don't forget to celebrate and cry when you achieve your dreams! :)
