USA Women’s Saber Fencers in Moscow: Zagunis, Schnieder and Wozniak Ready For Action (And for the cold!)

2-time Olympic champion and world #1 ranked fencer Mariel Zagunis, Dagmara Wozniak and Daria Schneider, all ranked top-16 in the world, hung out at the fencing venue today.  They cheered on the boys (Thanks guys!) and settled in a bit as they prepare to compete shortly.

Olympian Emily Jacobson and Ibty Mohammed will be in action tomorrow on the first day of the women’s saber fencing competition.

Morehouse Paces Team USA with Top 16 Finish. Nemscik Reclaims Former Glory with Victory over Oh

Moscow, Russia – Tim Morehouse, 31, led US fencers today at the Moscow Saber Fencing World Cup with an 11th place finish out of 121 competitors.   The rest of the US team, Daryl Homer, James Williams, Ben Igoe, Mike Etropolski and Jeff Spear were each eliminated in the round of 64.

Morehouse defeated Kuksa (UKR) 15-9 in the round of 64, Kuniusz (POL) 15-7 in the round of 32 before falling to Tricarico (ITA) 13-15 in the match to make the top-8.     Daryl Homer lost 13-15 to Samelle (ITA), Williams lost 11-15 with Kosikov, Etropolski lost 11-15 to Limbach (GER), Spear lost 5-15 to Lopez (FRA) and Igoe lost 10-15 to Szalgy (HUN).  

Zsolt Nemscik (HUN) captured the gold over Oh (KOR).   3rd place was Samelle (ITA) and Dumetrescus (ROM).  

This was coach Yury Gelman’s first international tournament since the Beijing Olympics.  He has been absent battling cancer and he is now 100% healthy and back to his full-time coaching responsibilities. 

The US fencers are back in action tomorrow in the team event against Germany in the round of 16.
