I just got back from Philly where I competed in a USA Vs. the World tournament…we lost 30-22, but it was a great show for the 500 or so spectators at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Some great pictures posted on on the fencing tournament and also on the FIE Congress which brought together the heads of 120+ countries to discuss the future of fencing.

Soren Thompson 3rd at 2011 Challenge Bernadotte (

By Craig Harkins ( Thompson knocks off teammate Seth Kelsey on the way to his podium finish.

Soren Thompson entered the top-64 at the Challenge Bernadotte faced off against teammate and #5 seed Seth Kelsey.  He defeated Kelsey 9-8 and then went on to take 3rd place.  Kelsey was not the only big upset as France’s Gauthier Grumier lost in the round of 64.

The 2011 Challenge Bernadotte grew to 191 fencers, hailing from 43 nations.  That’s an increase from the 2010 number of just 27 nations.

Fencing.Net: Mariel Zagunis wins Orleans Saber World Cup

Congrats to Mariel!

Mariel Zagunis continued her march to London 2012 with a commanding performance in the finals in Orleans, France.  She defeated the Cecilia Berder (FRA) 15-4 in the final bout in front of an audience of 5,000.  In the semi-finals, Zagunis dispatched Russian Sohpia Velikaia 15-5.  Velikaia’s teammate, Ekaterina Diatchenko (RUS) tied with Velikaia for 3rd.

Fun day at the venue today signing autographs and sharing the National Championship trophy at the table at the Georgia Congress Center.    Got to meet and sign autographs for several hundred folks .(All so nice!)  I’ll be there tomorrow again from 1-3pm time frame.
