Fencing Masters Roadshow in Pictures! (PART 1)

Last night marked the unveiling of the FENCING MASTERS ROADSHOW!

Held at the Baryshnikov Arts Center before a crowd of 200 people the event featured fencing matches between Olympians Nicole Ross and Nzhingha Prescod and Daryl Homer versus Tim Morehouse.   The choir from Democracy Prep sang the national anthem, we premiered the Fencing in the Schools promo video we made with the prestigious Sunshine Sachs company and also had our “How to Watch Fencing” demonstration.

The event was part of the Fencing in the Schools Kick-Off and helped to generate $37,000 dollars to help fund 1500+ kids at 6 schools in Harlem to have fencing!  Thank you to everyone who donated and there is still time if you’d like to contribute: http://www.crowdrise.com/fencingintheschools2013

Here is what we accomplished last night with your help:

  • FUNDRAISING: We raised over $37,000 dollars to get 1500+ kids fencing in Harlem including an Olympic assembly for all the kids where we will pay our Olympian ambassadors $500 for doing the assembly to also support their Olympic Dreams.   These kids will also become fans of our sport and athletes through our program and hopefully follow Daryl Homer, Nzhingha Prescod, Nicole Ross and others to Rio.
  • EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS: We created a promo video for the foundation that goes into the benefits of fencing and with a CALL TO ACTION for schools if they want fencing to come to us!Here is Link: http://youtu.be/0mrqG50qZlg
  • FENCING ON TV: The fencing match last night will air on Universal Sports in 3 weeks.    The network reaches 40 Million homes across the country and they paid for the TV production.   This will continue to give us a great platform to bring additional corporate sponsors onboard.
  • BUILDING RELATIONSHIP WITH KEY CONSTITUENTS: Last night, we had the CEO of Universal Sports and their board attending, representatives from Sabra Hummus along with a few potential additional corporate sponsors.
  • MEDIA: We were featured on WPIX 11 morning show, FOX 5 NYC did a profile, the Daily News has a piece coming out, Maxim.Com attended and is doing a video, the US Olympic Committee put out a press release, is doing an article AND tweeted to their 250,000+ followers about the event and the images will be on WIRE IMAGE where they can be picked up by additional media outlets.  We were also covered by a website called GUESTofaGuest.
  • FENCING TECHNOLOGY: We continue to try to find new and fun ways to show fencing.  We built 2 huge REPEATER LIGHTS that we can use in all our shows.  The large FENCING sign you see and there is a MASTERS on the other side both LIGHT UP and serve as scoring lights for some added WOW factor.

1 MILLION STUDENTS IN THE U.S.!

KICKOFF EVENT AT BARYSHNIKOV ARTS CENTER TO FEATURE

“FENCING MASTERS” COMPETITION WITH OLYMPIANS AND VERY SPECIAL GUESTS

2008 Olympic Silver Medalist, and three-time Olympic team member Tim Morehouse launches his ambitious FENCING-IN-THE-SCHOOLS initiative with a special fundraising event at the Baryshnikov Arts Center (450 West 37th Street, NYC) on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13 at 7:00pm.  FENCING-IN-THE-SCHOOLS (501c3) is aimed at increasing awareness for the sport of fencing and highlighting fencing as a great fitness alternative to combat childhood obesity in America’s youth while instilling Olympic ideals.  The initiative will launch with a pilot program for 1,800 students at six schools in East and West Harlem starting in late March through the Democracy Prep charter school network.

The March 13th event, held in collaboration with online fundraising platform Crowdrise, aims to secure funding for the initial pilot program.  Event sponsor Sabra Hummus is covering the event costs so that 100% of proceeds raised through ticket sales will be dedicated to covering expenses for launching fencing schools with Democracy Prep.

“The goal of FENCING-IN-THE-SCHOOLS is to eventually get a million kids fencing, and we know that in order to do that we’re going to need people to take action to assist us, “said Morehouse.  “By partnering with Crowdrise, we feel we’ve found a great platform that will enable us to engage the energy and passion of the fencing community and local schools to help us bring fencing across the country.  This effort depends on your support.  Please join us!”

The event will feature inspirational talks by members of the U.S. Olympic fencing team and FENCING-IN-THE-SCHOOLS ambassadors, including World Cup Paris Team Gold Medalist Miles Chamley-Watson and Olympians Nzhingha Prescod and Daryl Homer.

A highlight of the kickoff event will be the Fencing Masters competition featuring the best U.S. fencers competing head-to-head, including Morehouse versus Homer in a battle of the top two men’s saber fencers in the country.  UNIVERSAL SPORTS NETWORK, which aired last year’s Fencing Masters: Kickoff to London, will air the Fencing Masters portion of the FENCING-IN-THE-SCHOOLS launch event in April 2013.

ABOUT FENCING-IN-THE-SCHOOLS

Fencing-in-the-Schools (www.fencingingtheschools.org) is an educational organization whose mission statement, “Empowering youth to achieve excellence through the sport of fencing” will be carried out by bringing the sport of fencing to schools around the country to fight childhood obesity while promoting the Olympic ideals of excellence, respect, and friendship.

It was founded in 2011 by Olympic Silver Medalist and Teach For America alum Tim Morehouse so children could have the same opportunities and benefits that he had from the sport. Fencing-in-the-Schools carries out its mission by training school teachers to teach the sport of fencing utilizing the Fencing-in-the-Schools youth curriculum. The curriculum focuses on both the physical and mental skills of fencing, while also promoting the ideals of the Olympic movement.

The organization raises awareness for the sport and its programs by utilizing U.S. Olympic team members and Fencing-in-the-Schools ambassadors to conduct school assemblies, give fencing clinics, appear in promotional videos, and participate in events throughout the country that help promote their mission.

The program will kick-off with 1800 students fencing in East and West Harlem and look to expand to 10,000 students across the country in the 2013-2014 school year with an ultimate goal of 1 million kids fencing by 2023.  Schools interested in participating in a program should email info@fencingintheschools.org

FENCING MASTERS: KICK-OFF TO LONDON 2012

TO BRING U.S. OLYMPIC FENCERS TO THE BIG APPLE

Tickets go on sale for Olympic tune-up event today

NEW YORK — En garde!

New York City is getting ready to host the largest U.S. spectator fencing tournament leading up to the Olympic Games this summer in London. Fencing Masters: Kick-Off to London 2012 will feature some of the sport’s biggest names including two-time Olympic gold medalist Mariel Zagunis and World bronze medalist Lee Kiefer, as they take on top contenders from around the world in a tune-up event for London.

Tickets go on sale today and can be purchased at www.fencingmastersnyc.com

Fencing Masters, the only regularly televised fencing competition in the United States, will be held June 26 in the Hammerstein Ballroom. The inaugural Fencing Masters attracted more than 1,800 spectators and was televised on SportsNet NY. Sponsorship dollars and ticket sales provided direct support for U.S. Olympic hopefuls.

The event will be done in complete New York style, featuring several amazing innovations to bring a night of enjoyment for those who are familiar to sport as well as for newcomers. Among the special features of the event are: large-screen instant replay, mask cams to bring the crowd inside the action, specially designed uniforms and a stage created by a Broadway set designer.

An initial six-weapon team has been announced, representing all three disciples of fencing: foil, epee and saber, with both the men and women competing together. A second U.S. team of London-bound American athletes will be announced in the coming months.

Among the headliners is Mariel Zagunis, a two-time Olympic Champion in women’s saber who is certain to be among America’s top medal hopes again this summer in London.

“The Fencing Masters is a great chance for us to show the spirit and skill of the U.S. team on our own soil before we leave for the London Games,” Zagunis said. “I’m really looking forward to competing with some of the world’s best fencers. Hopefully people from all around the country will support us and join in our enthusiasm for fencing!”

In women’s foil, Lee Kiefer will compete in the foil discipline, as will British-born U.S. citizen and New York City resident Miles Chamley-Watson, who achieved a No. 2 world ranking at the age of 20. Rounding out the initial team are New York Native saber-fencer Daryl Homer, who placed 15th at the 2010 World Championships, U.S. National women’s Epee Champion Courtney Hurley and 2004 Olympian Soren Thompson.

The format will be a team points relay with two U.S. teams of London bound athletes competing, along with an additional US team of Future Stars who will earn their spots in qualifying tournaments from around the country.   Two international squads of all-stars, whose line-ups will be announced in the coming months, will challenge the US teams for the Fencing Masters trophy.

“One of the goals I set after our Olympic team’s success play in Beijing was to help grow fencing in the United States while supporting our athletes and bringing the sport into the mainstream.  The sport is amazing to watch and I’m excited that more people in the US will be able to experience its beauty, grace and athleticism before London,” said Fencing Masters founder and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Tim Morehouse, who is vying for a spot on the U.S. team in London.

Proceeds from the event will support the Fencing-in-the-Schools program, which also was created by Morehouse to help start fencing programs in disadvantaged communities and which will be launched in the 2012-2013 calendar school year. In addition, proceeds also will be used to provide grants to help support the Olympic dreams of the U.S team going to London. The inaugural Fencing Masters provided $25,000 in grants to Olympic hopefuls.

The event is being produced by WCMG Events in partnership with the sport’s national governing body USA Fencing. Nike Fencing was named as an initial sponsor for the event with additional sponsor-related announcements coming in the upcoming months.
